As a parent, you likely place excellent oral health for your children high on your priority list. After all, there's nothing sweeter than your child's smile!
Did you know your child should visit their dentist every six months, starting at age one? While this may seem early, babies can get their first teeth as early as four or five months old, so it's important to start monitoring their oral development. Early visits also help kids get used to the dental chair so they learn the dentist is a safe place to visit.
Understanding Preventive Dental Care for Kids
At Children's Dentistry of Northborough, Dr. Macdonald and her team provide comfortable, fun, and educational children's dental hygiene appointments. We aim to make dentist visits fun and upbeat for kids while teaching them about their dental health. We encourage parents to be involved in their child's oral care, and preventive visits are a great time to get questions answered.
Here's what you can expect during a preventive dental appointment:
- For babies and toddlers — We begin by getting them acclimated to the dental chair. We count their teeth and monitor their oral health. We talk with parents about nutrition, answer questions, and share tips for effective home care. Once your child is older and comfortable with it, we'll include teeth cleanings in their appointments.
- Elementary school-aged kids — We'll start taking x-rays as a baseline for oral health. We recommend a first orthodontic evaluation around age seven or eight, as some kids can benefit from early intervention.
- Adolescents and teens — We guide kids through orthodontic treatment and monitor their home care skills. We also provide custom mouthguards for kids who play sports.
