Toddler brushing their teeth at pediatric dentist near me NorthboroughIt’s vital for parents not to overlook the importance of dental care for their children starting at a very young age. At Children’s Dentistry of Northborough, we provide oral health services for patients of all ages—from infants and toddlers to pre-teens, teens, and adults. At every age and every stage of life, we’re here to protect your family’s healthy smiles.

Infant Oral Health Care

Our dentists recommend that your child have their first dental appointment with us when their baby teeth first appear, but no later than age one. These early visits are meant to help your son or daughter adjust to new faces and new surroundings. Every child is unique, and we will proceed at a pace they feel comfortable with. If your child is receptive, the hygienist will perform a cleaning, but we won’t rush them. Dr. Macdonald will count your child’s teeth as they lay in your lap.

At this age, education on prevention is the most important thing. We use the time productively to talk to you about ways you can improve your child’s oral health care at home. More than 28% of children have cavities before they start kindergarten. Early care is a great step in improving oral health behaviors by giving care givers tools the can use to prevent cavities.

Pediatric Dental Services

As your child develops, we’ll schedule dental exams and teeth cleaning appointments every six months. Our dentists may use dental x-rays and intraoral cameras to inform you about your child’s oral health. If we find a cavity, we’ll fill it, and if we find gum disease, our dental hygienist will provide gentle treatment to eliminate it. If your child is too young for treatment we may recommend silver diamine fluoride therapy to help arrest decay while we wait to treat the cavity.

Fluoride is a mineral that keeps bones and teeth healthy. Many kids already get sufficient amounts of fluoride in their diets and tap water. Some children will need a prescription supplement. We will let you know if you live in a town that doesn’t have fluoride in the tap water. Children benefit greatly from fluoride varnish treatments which we apply to the teeth after their cleaning to help prevent cavities.

Dental sealants are used to protect the rough chewing surfaces of teeth like molars from bacteria that cause cavities. Applying sealants is a simple procedure that usually does not require a local anesthetic. The sealant bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth forming a protective shield over the enamel.

Invisalign & Braces in Northborough

Boy with braces smiling at dentist in Northborough, MADr. Anita Bhatt is our orthodontist in Northborough and likes to see children for an evaluation around age seven. At this age, she can determine if early orthodontic treatment—also referred to as phase one or interceptive orthodontics—will benefit your child’s future oral development.

Your child may not need braces, and, in fact, we may be able to provide early treatment that prevents the need for orthodontics in the future. If your child does need braces, Dr. Bhatt will customize their treatment to fit their unique needs. Some children don’t need early orthodontic care and will start braces or Invisalign with Dr. Bhatt when all the baby teeth fall out.

We Put Your Child’s Comfort First

Many children can benefit from the relaxation offered with sedation dentistry. Nitrous oxide is a very safe and gentle method for helping your son or daughter stay calm during their appointment. If your child has multiple procedures or extensive work planned, we’ll be happy to talk to you about in-office general anesthesia with Dr. Patrick McCarthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Even if you brush twice a day and floss every day, you can still get a cavity. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth at least two times daily (two minutes each time) to reduce plaque build-up. While a quick swipe across your teeth with toothpaste may freshen your breath, it doesn’t remove cavity-causing plaque or leftover food particles.

Failure to brush your teeth correctly and for the appropriate time can still result in sugar and plaque coating your teeth and leading to oral bacteria and tooth decay.

It’s also essential to carefully and equally brush each area of your mouth so you don’t miss spots that can accumulate enamel-eroding plaque and bacteria. Be sure to brush all chewing surfaces, inner and outer, and floss between your teeth.

Another way to reduce your risk of cavities is to consume healthy foods and drinks. Sugary and acidic foods and beverages stick to the teeth and provide fuel for the bacteria in your mouth. Fruits and vegetables improve saliva production, which washes away food debris, and calcium and fluoridated water strengthen and protect your teeth.

Finally, it would help to visit your family dentist in Northborough for routine dental exams and professional cleanings to ensure your smile stays healthy and cavity-free.

pediatric dentist northborough | family dentistryA pediatric dentist in Northborough only sees children. A general dentist sees adults but may also see children. A family dentist sees everyone, no matter their age.

Children’s Dentistry of Northborough emphasizes children’s dentistry but provides comprehensive dental care for:

  • Children
  • Adults
  • Senior Adults

In other words, we welcome everyone!

Why Choose a Dental Office with Both?

  • Diverse Treatments: A family dentist may provide more dental treatments and services to satisfy a wide range of needs and goals.
  • Diverse Skills: A dentist who sees patients of all ages throughout the day may have a more diverse skill set.
  • Long-Term Dentist-Patient Relationship: By choosing a family dentist, your child can keep their practitioner long-term, which helps build solid relationships.
  • All in the Family: When family members see the same dentist, treatment days are more convenient. The team can also monitor traits unique to loved ones.
  • A Matter of Trust: Children who see the same dentist as parents or caregivers may feel more trusting and less afraid, especially during those crucial first dental visits.

Are You Looking for a Family Dentist in Northborough?

To learn more about our approach to care or if you have questions for our dental team, contact us today at (508) 393-9394.

We recommend waiting until the first tooth erupts, usually around six months or before their first birthday. If you have questions or concerns before that time, we will book your child or infant early for their first dental visit.

Pediatric Dentistry in Northborough, MA

Early children’s dentistry helps acclimate little ones to our clinic setting and allows us to familiarize them with the sights and sounds of the dentist.

Of course, we make their appointment fun—a ride in the dental chair, counting teeth, and having a few laughs.

Though it is fun for them, we still monitor their oral development and ensure teeth erupt correctly. Early dental care allows the dentist to intervene if there are issues, which can save time, money, and discomfort in the long run.

We provide general checkups, teeth cleanings (eventually), periodic x-rays, dental sealants, fluoride treatments, and more. We also offer tips and advice on teething, thumb-sucking, and other developmental rites as your child ages.

The dentist shares all findings with you and is happy to answer any questions you might have.
